Does it work offline? Entirely. The dictionary and typefaces are bundled in the app; it makes no network connections at all.
Where do the definitions come from? George A. Grierson's A Dictionary of the Kashmiri Language (1916–1932), digitised by the Digital South Asia Library. Around 21,000 entries.
Why does a definition look archaic, or plain wrong? Grierson is roughly a century old. It records early-twentieth-century Kashmiri, so meanings have drifted and some entries are obsolete. It is a historical record, not a guide to how people speak today.
Why is there offensive material in the dictionary? Grierson wrote inside the colonial ethnographic tradition, and the lexicon contains language about caste, religion, gender, disability, and sexuality that is offensive now. We have not rewritten the source — editing a historical dictionary would misrepresent what it is. Word of the Day is drawn from a filtered subset so the app never puts that material in front of you unprompted, but search and browse reach the whole lexicon by design.
Why is a word missing? If it entered Kashmiri after about 1930, it will not be there. Grierson also spells many words differently from modern convention — try the search box with a different vowel, or search the English meaning instead.
Why is the romanisation unfamiliar? Headwords use the Koashurkhat romanisation. Grierson's own spelling is shown on the word's detail screen when the two differ.
Why do some definitions have odd spacing, like (f. atüj ü )? Grierson sets final vowels as superscripts, and flattening that typography to plain text leaves a gap. Cosmetic, on the list to fix.
Are my favourites saved? Not yet — they last for the current session and clear when you close the app. Persistence is planned.
How do I report a wrong definition? Email us the headword and what is wrong. Corrections to the transliteration are especially welcome; that part is our work, not Grierson's, and errors in it are ours to fix.
