1. What Lugát is
Lugát is a free reference app for the Kashmiri language, published by Yimberzol Foundation. It provides dictionary lookup and flashcard study over a digitised historical lexicon.
2. Licence
We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to use Lugát on devices you own or control, for personal and educational purposes.
You may not: resell or sublicense the app; extract or redistribute the bundled dictionary data as a dataset or competing product; decompile or reverse-engineer the app except where that right cannot be excluded by law; or use the app to break any applicable law.
3. About the dictionary content
The definitions in Lugát are drawn from George A. Grierson's A Dictionary of the Kashmiri Language (Asiatic Society of Bengal, 1916–1932), a historical scholarly work. You should understand what that means before relying on it:
- It is roughly a century old. Spellings, usage notes, and glosses reflect early-twentieth-century Kashmiri, not contemporary spoken usage. Words have shifted meaning; some entries are archaic or obsolete.
- It reflects the assumptions of its era. Grierson wrote within the colonial ethnographic tradition. Some entries contain language about caste, religion, gender, disability, and ethnicity that is offensive by present-day standards. We have not rewritten the source text — altering a historical lexicon would misrepresent it — but we do filter what the app puts in front of you unprompted (see the Word of the Day note below).
- It is not authoritative for modern Kashmiri. Do not treat it as a translation service, a style guide, or a substitute for a living speaker.
Transliteration into the Koashurkhat romanisation is our own work and may contain errors.
Word of the Day is drawn from a filtered subset of entries. Search and browse deliberately reach the entire lexicon, including material some users will find offensive or explicit. This is a reference work, and censoring lookup would defeat its purpose.
4. No warranty
Lugát is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose and accuracy. We do not warrant that definitions are correct, current, or complete.
Do not rely on Lugát where accuracy matters — legal documents, medical contexts, official translation, academic citation. Cite Grierson's original text, not this app.
5. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of Lugát. Nothing here limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited.
6. Changes and availability
We may update, change, or discontinue Lugát at any time without notice. We may update these terms; continued use after a change means you accept it.
7. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of India, without regard to conflict-of-law principles.
